Ace in the Hole
Woods Hole's "Queen of Hearts" Raffle
The Woods Hole Business Association will begin a Queen of Hearts-style raffle to be called "Ace in the Hole" with the first drawing to take place on Sunday May 6, 2012 at 6 pm at the Landfall Restaurant in Woods Hole. This will be a weekly raffle with a progressive jackpot. Drawings will take place on Sundays at 6 pm at different Woods Hole businesses (schedule below). The Queen of Hearts-style raffle has quickly become popular throughout the Northeast, and jackpots regularly grow to thousands of dollars. You won't have to be present to win, but you will only receive 80% of the Jackpot of the drawing if you are not present.
The game starts with a deck of 52 playing cards plus two Jokers being shuffled and placed individually in small envelopes. The envelopes are sealed, reshuffled and numbered from 1 to 54. Once placed in a locked display case, the sealed cards will be stored at the Bank of Woods Hole. Tickets are sold for the raffle, just like any other raffle. Tickets are available for purchase from participating Woods Hole businesses (see list below) and participants must mark tickets with their name and a number between 1 and 54 to be eligible to win. Tickets must be turned in by 12 noon on the day of the raffle at participating businesses, and are available for sale at the raffle host business until 5 pm. At 6 pm on the raffle night, the tickets sold that week are mixed and a winner is drawn. The jackpot is 50% of the money raised, but winner must be present to win the entire jackpot. The number chosen by the winning raffle ticket is opened and the corresponding card is revealed. If that card is the Ace of Spades, the raffle ticket holder wins (if present) 50% of the raffle money collected that week plus any jackpot carryover. If the raffle winner is not present at the drawing, winner will receive 40% of the raffle money collected that week plus 80% of the carryover. All other Aces in the deck win $100 each. Winnings will be distributed within five business days.
The jackpot money not paid out to the raffle winner is carried over to the following week’s drawing, and tickets for that raffle go on sale immediately after the drawing. The card that was revealed is marked and placed face up in the display case for all to see and the following week there is one less envelope (and corresponding card) . This continues every week until the Ace of Spades is discovered and the jackpot won. July 1st 2012 will be the final drawing of the WHBA “Ace in the Hole” raffle. If no winner is chosen on the first drawing that night, names will be continually drawn until a winner is picked.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, to be announced at the end of the raffle on July 1st, 2012 at the Landfall. Coalition for Buzzards Bay is a membership-supported non profit organization dedicated to the restoration, protection and sustainable use and enjoyment of our irreplaceable Bay and its watershed. The Bay Coalition works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy.
